Any Damage to Braces Will Likely Increase the Time Needed to Achieve Your Ideal Alignment

Posted .

Dr. Ronald Champion installed your braces to effectively realign your teeth. This is done by progressively tightening and adjusting your braces to stretch the periodontal ligaments into their new position. Any change or lapse in this progressive tension can result in multiple teeth relapsing toward their old position.

Any damage to your braces has the potential to affect this tension and position. Even repaired it will likely increase the number of adjustment sessions needed to achieve your ideal alignment. The longer you delay in having the problem addressed the more likely you are to experience relapse of other complications.

When Dr. Ronald Champion first installed your braces, you were given a piece of special orthodontic wax. If a sharp point is threatening your cheek or gums, you can secure it inside the wax to protect it while you wait to see the doctor. Still, if you don’t have the wax handy, you can make do in a pinch with a pencil eraser.

If a metal band comes off, or is damaged, you shouldn’t attempt to adjust it or reapply it yourself. The same is true of spacers. In fact, it’s not uncommon for a spacer to fall out shortly before your next scheduled adjustment session.

If any part of your braces is bent or damaged, you should not delay in contacting our Champion Orthodontics team in Modesto, California at 209-575-5888 to have it repaired. We are here to help you in any way we can during your orthodontic experience!
