Are you familiar with the term malocclusions? Malocclusions, which are often referred to as “bad bites”, refer to the various degrees of irregularities and misalignments that can occur with your teeth and jaws.
Malocclusions can arise as a result of several factors, many of which may be out of your control. Let’s take a quick look at some of the types and styles of bad bites that may be affecting your smile:
— Crossbites can arise when your lower jawbone protrudes out farther than your upper jawbone.
— Rotation malocclusions arise when your teeth rotate out of their proper alignment.
— Underbites, or “bulldog” teeth, arise when the lower incisors protrude out further than your upper incisors.
— Spacing malocclusions can arise when there are overcrowded teeth or large gaps between teeth.
— Open bites arise when there are disconnected upper and lower incisors which affect you when biting down.
— Overbites, or upper protrusions or “buck” teeth, arise when upper incisors protrude out farther than the lower incisors.
– Transposition malocclusions arise when the teeth erupt above the gum line but are located in the wrong space.
– Misplaced midlines arise when the center of your upper incisors (the front teeth) are incorrectly aligned with the center of the lower incisors.
